A Tale Of Two Preserves & Protecting Future Generations

It is easy to forget in these troubled times that government can help good people do good things. This post is predicated on that notion, and is the tale of two personal odysseys with government-assisted happy endings some 35 years apart that are worth sharing as we leave behind the snows of winter and spring rains and head outdoors.
The first odyssey began back in the early 1970s. I was riding my bicycle into the White Clay Creek Valley, a pristine area in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware containing a diverse and unique range of plant and animal species.

Except for the distant cry of a raven, there were only the sounds of my children and my friend Sloan and I peeling and munching on orange slices. It was noontime and we were squatting under the cottonwoods in a ravine beneath the Castle, an exquisitely constructed silo-like structure of sandstone at Hovenweep, a cluster of Anasazi ruins in the Utah desert. The trees offered the only shade in the area.
