Prologue to a Kunstlerian Future (by way of a Twilight Zone episode)

Simon Treadwell sat cross-legged on the floor of the empty apartment, hunched over the glowing screen of an electronic book reader. His eyes scanned the lines feverishly, then closed, his lips moving silently, repeating the words. He rocked back and forth as he recited, as if this rhythm would aid memorization. Then back to the reader for more.
The abandoned apartment was bare, except for a few bits of broken furniture he had piled against the door. The windows were mostly broken, the glass littering the sill and the floor beneath, jagged shards dangling from the casings. A cold wind moaned through the broken panes. The floors were of hardwood, a feature Simon could once have appreciated. Now, wall-to-wall shag carpeting would have been a comfort.

Illegal ORV Rally in Utah Wilderness

Really, I’m going to post something other than panicky action alerts on The Clade, but in the meantime:
1000 off-roaders riding all-terrain vehicles are scheduled for an illegal rally in Utah wilderness Saturday, May 9. Help stop them today by filling out a quick online form asking the Bureau of Land Management to enforce the law. Go here for a short article from Adventure Life.

When those of us who think the desert is worth something speak out against destructive, poorly placed solar power projects, we’re called NIMBYs, BANANAs, obstructionists, climate change deniers, or worse. But when Southern California Edison blocks the best initiative available to put lots of photovoltaic (PV) solar power on our cities’ rooftops and parking lots, that’s just business as usual.
